The Wexford Festival Opera celebrates its 70th anniversary with its first performance in New York on April 14

Wexford Opera Festival celebrates its 70th anniversary with its first concert in New York on Thursday April 14, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall, featuring renowned soprano Angela Meadwith pianist Myra Huang, in works by Wagner, Meyerbeer, Amy Beach and others.

The festive concert brings together Angela Mead with the Wexford Festival Opera, which has played a central role in his career; she made her European debut there in 2010, in the title role of Virginia, rarely heard, by Saverio Mercadante. Following this, she quickly became one of today’s outstanding singers who excel in demanding 19th century roles. Bel Canto repertoire, as well as in the operas of Mozart and Verdi. She has performed at the world’s greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Operathe Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Frankfurt Opera and the Teatro Regio di Torino.

In addition to the concert in New York, the Wexford Festival Opera presents three other international concerts to celebrate its 70th anniversary, including recitals by Eleanora Buratto at Teatro Torlonia Rome on December 22, 2021, by Mariangela Sicilia at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow on February 12 2022 and by Ermanela Jaho at St. John’s Smith Square in London. Each of these sopranos appeared at Wexford Festival Opera early in their careers.

Wexford Festival Opera won Best Festival at the International Opera Awards in 2017, confirming its reputation for high-quality productions which attract thousands of opera-goers from around the world to Wexford each year. Over the years the Festival has championed the works of Donizetti, having staged more of his operas than any other opera company in the world outside of his hometown of Bergamo; sparked a Massenet revival; and established an international reputation for both attracting and making big stars.
