Man has died after being pushed onto oncoming train in San Diego

A man has died after being pushed onto an oncoming train in an unprovoked attack on New Years Day in San Diego, police said.

Authorities are still looking for the suspect who fled on foot after the attack on Saturday at around 6:15 a.m., the San Diego Police Department said in a statement.

The victim and suspect got out of a southbound tram at the Old Town station and were walking on the platform when the suspect, unprovoked, pushed the man onto the oncoming train, police said .

“The man hit the side of a passing train, causing his injuries,” police said.

Officers found the victim unconscious with “apparent upper body trauma on the platform of the cart.” He was pronounced dead at 6:23 am. The identity of the victim, described as a white male in his 60s, was not immediately disclosed.

The suspect is described by police as a thin, fair-skinned male, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was dressed in black clothes, police added.

The Old Town Transit Center was closed as detectives investigate the incident and attempt to locate witnesses, but service was scheduled to resume, the San Diego Metro Transportation System said on Twitter.
