Gun violence rises in Cleveland over the weekend of July 4 as police report 17 people shot dead in 14 shootings
CLEVELAND – The July 4 holiday weekend was marked by gun violence in Cleveland as 17 people were reportedly affected by gunfire between Friday and Monday, Cleveland Police said.
Police reported 14 separate shootings between Friday and Monday killing 17 people. None of the shootings were reported fatal, but many victims had to be transported to nearby hospitals.
It was not said if any of the shootings were related.
Below is a recap of the violent Cleveland vacation weekend:
Police were called to the 3200 block of East 135th Street on Friday morning, where they found a 70-year-old man who had been shot several times in the chest, police said.
The shooting occurred during an aggravated theft. Police said EMS transported the man to university hospitals for treatment.
Officers responded to the 1400 block of East 94th Street on Saturday afternoon where they found a 52-year-old man who had been shot in the head.
EMS transported the man to the teaching hospitals. His condition is unknown at this time.
Less than 30 minutes later, police were called to the 10900 block of Woodland Avenue for another shootout.
Officers found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his back and leg. The Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority took over the case, police said.
Early Sunday morning at around 1:25 a.m., officers were called to the East 8th Street and Prospect Avenue area where it was discovered that a 22-year-old man had been shot in the head. The man was transported by private car to the Cleveland Clinic.
Just over two hours later, officers responded to East 116th Street for yet another shooting where they discovered a 34-year-old woman had been shot in the foot. The woman was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center in a private car.
On Sunday afternoon, officers responded to 3300 Steelyard Drive where they found a 34-year-old man who had been shot. The man was shot in the buttocks but refused treatment, police said.
Later that evening, officers were called to the area of ââEast 139th Street and Kinsman Road with reports of several people being shot.
While there, officers discovered that a 26-year-old woman had been shot in the elbow and was taken to Hillcrest Hospital in a private car, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg and was killed. been transported to teaching hospitals. by EMS, a 19-year-old woman was shot in the hip and was transported to university hospitals by private car and a 30-year-old woman had a gunshot wound to her shoulder and was transported to university hospitals by private car .
The shooting is still under investigation.
About 20 minutes later, police were called to the area of ââEast 93rd Street and Parmalee Avenue where they found a 23-year-old man who had been shot in the leg. The man was transported to university hospitals by EMS, police said.
Early Monday morning, officers responded to block 18100 Euclid Avenue where they found a 27-year-old man who had been shot in the back. The man was transported to university hospitals by EMS, police said.
Less than 30 minutes later, police were called to the 13200 block of Ferris Avenue where they found a 43-year-old man who had been shot in the leg. The man was transported to university hospitals by EMS.
Officers were called to the East 156th Street and Grovewood Avenue area to report a shooting where they discovered a 23-year-old man had been shot in the knee by a bullet. He was taken to Euclid Hospital in a private car.
Officers were told that a 25-year-old man was shot in the hand at an unknown location and was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by a private car. The man refused to provide information and left the hospital, police said.
Cleveland Police have received a report of a shooting in the 6600 block of Harvard Avenue. While there, police found a 67-year-old man who had been shot in the arm. He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by EMS.
Just after 3 a.m., officers responded to the 13400 block of Miles Avenue to report a shooting. Officers discovered that a 26-year-old man was shot in the knee and both thighs and was taken to Hillcrest Hospital by a private car.
The wave of shootings over the bank holiday weekend remains under investigation.
